Han Jing’s World
7:00 a.m.
So this is it senior high school at last! I’m not outgoing so I’m a little anxious right now. I want to make a good first impression. Will I make any friends? What if no one talks to me?
12:30 p.m.
I just had my first maths class at senior high school! The class was difficult, but the teacher was kind and friendly. He even told us a funny story, and everyone laughed so much! I found most of my classmates and teachers friendly and helpful.
5:32 p.m.
This afternoon, we had our chemistry class in the science lab. The lab is new and the lesson was great, but the guy next to me tried to talk to me the whole time. I couldn’t concentrate on the experiment. I really wanted to tell him to please be quiet and leave me alone!
10:29p.m.
What a day! This morning, I was worried that no one would talk to me. But I was wrong I didn’t feel awkward or frightened at all. I miss my friends from junior high school, but I believe I will make new friends here, and there’s a lot to explore at senior high. I feel much more confident than I felt this morning. I think that tomorrow will be a great day!

《First Impressions》
一、Teaching Objectives
1. Students can grasp the general idea of the passage and understand Han Jing’s experiences and feelings on her first senior high school day.
2. Students can extract the key information from the reading text taken from a social networking website.
3. Students can enhance their logical and critical thinking to describe one’s feelings at the beginning of the new high school life and study.
4. Students can establish a positive, optimistic and brand-new state of mind towards the new environment and be brave to welcome new challenges, live a more meaningful high school life and make good preparations for their future careers.
二、Teaching Key and Difficult Points
Key point: Students can understand the main idea of the passage and extract the information about the protagonist’s experiences on her first day in the senior high school.
Difficult points:
1. Students can extract the key information from the reading text taken from a social networking website.
2. Students can enhance their logical and critical thinking to describe their feelings at the beginning of the new high school life and study.
三、Teaching Procedures
Step 1. Lead-in
The teacher plays a video clip (The new school year begins and the freshmen of senior high school accompanied by their parents come to the new school to register, some of whom are being interviewed by the journalist from a famous newspaper in the city) and asks students to do a free talk about the video with the guidance of the teacher’s questions “What can you see from the video?” and “What’s it about?” Then the teacher guides students to answer the questions “How did you feel on your first day of senior high school?”, “Did you feel excited?”, “Did you feel anxious?” and “Did you feel frightened?” based on the related emojis, which naturally lead to the main topics of this lesson: the first day and the first impression in the senior high school.
Step 2. Pre-reading
1. The teacher simply introduces the protagonist, Han Jing.
2. Then the teacher leads students to guess the main idea of the text and where it is taken from according to the title and illustrations with the guidance of the following questions:
① What does Han Jing talk about in the text?
② Can you guess where the text is taken from?
Step 3. While-reading
Skimming
Students do fast-reading to check their guessing. After that, they need to finish a match task. Then draw simple emoji pictures to show Han Jing’s feelings on her first school day.
Match each paragraph with their correct core idea.
Students are asked to read the text paragraph by paragraph. This time, they need to pay more attention to the detailed information. After reading, they should finish two exercises.
Exercise1. Answer the following questions:
① Why did Han Jing feel anxious before school?
② How was her first maths class?
③ What happened in the Chemistry class? What would you do if this happened to you?
④ What did Han Jing learn from her first day at senior high school?
(Keys: ①She’s not outgoing. ②It was difficult. ③The guy next to Han Jing tried to talk to her the whole time. (One possible answer) If this happened to me, I would ignore him. ④She learnt that she would make new friends there and there was a lot to explore at senior high school.
Exercise 2. Fill in the table with the words and phrases from the text.

Intensive reading
Students read the text for the last time. They need to find out the difficult points they can’t understand and the teacher will give the corresponding explanations. Then, students are asked to finish the following tasks.
1. Question: Which order does Han Jing follow to talk about her first day?
(Keys: Time order)
2. Retell Han Jing’s experiences and feelings on her first school day based on the following clues.
Teachers: ________; Class: ________; Classmates: ________; High school: ________.
Step 4. Post-reading
Group work: Make a story
1. The teacher shows six pictures about a Chinese girl Linlin’s first school day as a freshman at Eton School to students.
2. The whole class are divided into six groups. Students should work with their group members to make a story by using the knowledge they have learnt today to talk about Linlin’s experiences and feelings on her first day based on the scenes in these pictures, and then some groups will be invited to show their stories in the front of the classroom.
3. The teacher invites students to make comments on the above performances together and encourages students to work better.
Step 5. Summary
1. Some students will be invited to make a summary on what they have learnt today.
2. Then the teacher will make some necessary supplements and stress the significance of learning this lesson: Establish a positive, optimistic and brand-new state of mind towards the new environment, embrace your high school life and be brave to welcome new challenges. Enjoy it and make good preparations for your bright future.
Step 6. Homework
1. Finish the exercise: Complete the passage with the correct forms of the words and phrases below.
2. Surf the internet to know about the newcomers’ performances between Chinese and American schools at the beginning of the school year and the differences between their school life. Share it next class.
